01Independent creative agency — London and Lisbon

Anything flat disappears.

Rilevo is a creative agency for organisations with something genuinely difficult to explain. Strategy, identity, digital product and environments — built with enough depth to survive contact with the real world.

02What we are

Twenty-six people. Six disciplines. One argument per project.

Not a network agency with a local office, and not two freelancers with a shared invoice. Rilevo is a single studio, structured so that strategy, design, engineering and production sit in the same room for the whole engagement.

It is why the work still looks intentional two years after launch, when the people who commissioned it have moved on and the system has to hold its own.

06Bring us the difficult one

The project with the impossible stakeholder map.

The category nobody has defined. The launch date that should have been six months later. The archive nobody has opened since 1994. Those are the ones this studio is built for.

Tell us what is actually wrong and we will tell you, in writing, whether we are the right people for it.

Capabilities

Six disciplines, one team, one invoice.

Most of our work uses three or four of these at once, which is the whole argument for having them in the same building. You can buy one on its own — we would rather tell you when that is a bad idea.

Capabilities and how to buy them

01

Brand strategy

Deciding what is true before deciding what it looks like.

02

Identity systems

A mark is the small part. The system is the job.

03

Digital product

Design systems and the front-end engineering to hold them up.

04

Environments

Wayfinding, exhibition and the graphics a building has to live with.

05

Editorial & packaging

Print that has to survive a warehouse and a bookshelf.

06

Film & motion

Moving work made from the same system as the still work.

The studio

Independent since 2015. Employee-owned since 2021.

Being owned by the people who do the work means we can turn a project down, take twice as long on the part nobody sees, and say the difficult thing in week two rather than week twenty.

Approach

Five stages. The first one is spent trying to disprove your brief.

Nearly every engagement we have watched go wrong went wrong before anything was designed. So we front-load the argument and make the making boring on purpose.

The whole process, stage by stage

01 / 2–4 weeks

Interrogate

We spend this stage trying to disprove the brief. Most briefs describe a symptom accurately and a cause badly, and the gap between the two is where the project actually is.

02 / 2–3 weeks

Frame

The argument becomes a set of constraints. Not moodboards — constraints. What the work must always do, what it must never do, and the measure everything will be judged against.

03 / 4–14 weeks

Make

Three-week cycles. At the end of each you see real work at real size in its real context — printed, on a screen at 360 px, mocked at the actual signage scale. Never a rendering of a rendering.

Selected work

Five projects, five arguments.

Each case study includes the outcome, the credits and the part we would do differently. Those last paragraphs are the ones worth reading.

Journal

What we have changed our minds about.

Occasional, long, and written by whoever did the work rather than by a marketing team. No newsletter, no gate.

    Working in raking light

Conservators light an object from the side to see what a flat photograph hides. It is also the only honest way to review a brand.

The first four weeks decide the other twenty

Almost every project we have watched go wrong went wrong before anything was designed. Here is what we now do instead.

    What a rebrand actually costs

The fee is the part everyone negotiates and rarely the part that hurts. An honest accounting of the other four costs.
